An update to the Globetrotter database is now available - February 22nd, 2012,
You will find it at www.pedmat.multiply.com
Download and choose “Save” then save the file to your desktop. Double click on the file icon on your desktop and you will be asked to extract the file (horses.mdb) to a preferred location. Browse to Desktop or some other suitable location such as an external flash drive and save the extracted file. You can now copy and paste the file in your Globetrotter Database folder to replace the existing one. IMPORTANT - If you are in the habit of adding your own horses be sure to make a backup of your old database before replacing with the new one. You can then import the backup file to add your horses back in.

2011 Pedigree Camp
Our annual get-together to discuss pedigrees and enjoy the delights of Prince Edward Island will be held June 17th - 19th. There is no fee this year and the agenda will not have the usual teaching sessions - just some free-wheeling sessions to discuss whatever you want, with an emphasis on the how-tos of pedigree research. Join us and learn from the experience of doing your homework with breeders from around North America. Paul Spears of Hanover Shoe Farm has already confirmed his attendance.
A schedule of events is below/ E-mail me for further information or a registration form. Please advise me as soon as possible if you plan to attend. Registration forms should be returned by June 1st.

Discussions: Registrants are asked to send suggested topics for the discussion sessions. Emphasis will be placed on the practical aspects and “how tos” of pedigree research. Attendees should bring their own laptops. Free installation of the Globetrotter program and database updates will be available on Friday at time of registration if required.
Fees: There is no registration fee. Lobster dinner cost of $35 is payable at registration. Limited to 30 participants so early advanced registration is recommended and is required no later than June 1st.
Registrants are responsible for own accommodations, meals and transportation. All Camp sessions will be held at the Quality Inn On The Hill in Charlottetown. 902-894-8572

Pedigree Camp 2011
Here are the dates for this year's Pedigree Camp.

You are welcome to join us for our annual get-together to discuss pedigrees and enjoy the delights of Prince Edward Island. I will have some details on event location and times of sessions once I get a handle on numbers. We usually use the Quality Inn On The Hill as our headquarters. In addition to the discussions we always fit in some social events. Friday night we will have a lobster supper and social, Saturday night we go to the track at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino, and Sunday we usually fit in a late afternoon tour before ending up for our windup social at my place in Charlottetown.
Register your intentions by email to Norman by June 1st or earlier if possible.

Prix d`Amerique 2011
I have been to Paris to see this race on several occasions. I have to admit that, next to the Gold Cup and Saucer on PEI, I have never been as excited by a race. It is not just a race but a whole smorgasborg of experiences with all that goes on before and during the program. There is the trade show in the grandstand where you can visit with the farms and stallion owners, the yearling sale, the antique book and art auction, and of course everything else that Paris has to offer outside of Vincennes. Dean Hoffman organizes a trip to the Prix and if he still has openings you should give him a call or email. You will not regret it.
I wrote about the race the last two years on this blog and last year I handicapped the race with some success considering that there are usually 16 entries. My handicapping was based on the presence of Florestan and/or Speedy Somolli in the pedigrees. Read the previous blogs to understand why. Some of the same horses are eligible this year although we wont know the actual starters for another week. Last year the winner was a longshot Oyonnax who had both Florestan and Speedy Somolli in his pedigree. The others who finished in the top five all had one or the other. The previous year the top two were out of dams by Florestan. Take a look at the entries when they are available and see if you can pick the top horses for this year. The pedigrees will be available on the pedigreeguru.com website. Post your picks here and the one who comes up with the most top five finishers will receive an alledgedly fabulous prize of a Pedigrees To Go netbook that is set up for all your pedigree needs - see the pedigreematching.com website for more details on Pedigrees To Go..

As a footnote the top two year old in France last year and off to a great start this year winning a Grade II race is Uno La Chesnaie by new sire Prince d'Espace. He is undefeated in his last five starts and like Oyonnax his pedigree has both Speedy Somolli and Florestan. You wont see him in the Prix d`Amerique but he will might race in the Group III race for three year olds on the same day.
